How much would a 20 by 20 ft patio cost?
A 20 by 20 ft patio is 400 sq ft, so a broom finish is about $4,800–$6,400 before HST. A 24 by 30 ft slab is 720 sq ft, which is about $8,640–$11,520.
What's included
Digging out, a compacted base, forms, the pour, the finish and cleanup. The patio is sloped so water runs away from the house.
What changes the price
Size and shape
Small patios cost more per square foot, because the setup is the same. Curves and steps add time.
Getting into the yard
Most patios are in the backyard. If the concrete truck can't reach, the concrete has to be pumped or wheeled in, which adds cost.
The finish
Broom finish costs least. Exposed aggregate and stamped patios cost more.

Around a pool
Pool decks need a careful slope and a finish that isn't slippery when it's wet.

How big should a patio be?
Start with what's going on it. A 10 by 12 ft patio fits a small table and chairs. At 10 by 20 ft, there's room for a table and a barbecue. At 16 by 20 ft, you can have a dining table, a barbecue and lounge chairs, with room to walk around them.
How soon can you use a new patio?
Stay off it for the first day or two while it sets. Give it about a week before you put a barbecue or heavy furniture on it.
Will a concrete patio crack?
Concrete shrinks a little as it cures, so control joints go in to give any cracks a straight, planned place to happen. A compacted base keeps the slab from settling, which matters on Windsor clay.
Should the patio go in before the lawn?
Yes. The grading and the patio come first, then sod or turf goes in around it, so nothing new gets torn up. The same crew can do all of it on one quote.
Concrete or interlock for a patio?
Concrete is one solid surface, with fewer places for weeds and ants, and it usually costs less. Interlock gives you more patterns, but the joints need some upkeep over the years.
