Fence rules in Essex
By-law 384 requires a permit before any fence goes up. Front yard fences can be 1.2 m, and side and back yard fences 1.8 m. On a corner lot, anything over 0.5 m in the 9 m triangle at the intersection has to be see-through.

The Town's application says plainly that it isn't a permit, so wait for approval. Book a layout meeting before the curb is cut and a pre-pour inspection once the base is compacted, each at least 72 hours ahead.

The Town allows lawn watering on alternate days from May to September, between 5 and 8 a.m. or 6 p.m. and midnight. A newly seeded or sodded lawn can get a temporary exemption permit, so apply before the sod arrives.
Bordering municipal land
Since 2025, if your property borders municipally owned land other than a road, the Town requires a survey from an Ontario Land Surveyor for a fence, at your own cost.
