Removing an old lawn: what to know.
What happens before the new lawn, turf or patio goes in decides how long it lasts.
Why the old lawn has to go
Sod laid over an old lawn usually fails. The new roots can't reach the soil, and old weeds come back through.
What's left underneath
Once the old grass is off, you can see the real grade of the yard, including low spots and any slope toward the house.
Getting ready for turf
Turf needs the old grass and soil dug out so a compacted base can go in. Removal is the first step.
Hauling it away
Old sod is heavy, and it adds up fast on a big lawn. Hauling and disposal are part of the price, so ask if a cheap quote includes them.

How much does lawn removal cost in Windsor?
Removal on its own usually runs $0.50–$1.00 per sq ft, including hauling it away, before HST. Most people replace it in the same job: old lawn out and new sod in runs about $1.50–$2.00 per sq ft.
Should I remove the old lawn or lay new sod on top?
Take it out. Laying new sod over old grass and weeds buries the problem, and the ground never gets levelled. Removing it first is how you get a flat lawn that lasts.
Do you remove the old lawn for artificial turf?
Yes. Turf needs the old grass and soil dug out so we can build a compacted base underneath. It's part of every turf job we do.
What happens to the old sod?
It leaves with us, along with the soil and debris. The site gets cleaned up every day.
Can you replace my old lawn with new sod?
Yes, it's one of our most common jobs: old lawn out, ground graded and levelled, fresh sod laid tight.
Is the work covered by a warranty?
Yes. We offer a one-year warranty, and we'll go over what it covers for your job at the free estimate. We're also fully insured and WSIB covered.
Often done on the same job.
