Fence rules change from town to town, and the material you pick decides what you pay now and later.
How high can it be?
In Windsor, up to 2.2 m in side and back yards and 1.2 m in front yards. Other towns are different: Tecumseh stops at 1.9 m, and Amherstburg's front yard limit is 0.9 m.
Vinyl or wood?
Wood costs less up front and has a warmer look, but it needs staining. Vinyl costs more, needs little upkeep and doesn't rot.
Do you need a permit?
Tecumseh, Lakeshore and the Town of Essex require one before you build. Windsor's by-law doesn't lay out a permit process for a regular home fence. Pools have their own rules everywhere.
Corner lots
Every town limits fences near a corner so drivers can see. The distance changes by town, so it's worth measuring before the posts go in.

Talk to your neighbour before the old fence comes down. Windsor now has a non-binding guideline on who pays.
