Vinyl or wood fence: which is better?
Wood costs less up front. Vinyl costs more to put in and less to look after. Here's how they compare for a Windsor yard.
Cost
Wood runs $35–$55 per linear ft and vinyl $55–$85 per linear ft. On 100 ft, that's about $3,500–$5,500 against $5,500–$8,500.
Upkeep
Wood needs a fresh coat of stain or paint every few years, and boards can warp, split or rot over time. Vinyl needs a wash with a hose now and then, and it never needs painting.
How long they last
A well-built wood fence often lasts 15 years or more. Vinyl usually lasts longer, because it doesn't rot. In both cases, the posts do the real work, so they have to be set solid.
The look
Wood looks warmer and can be stained to suit the house. Vinyl has a clean, even look that stays the same year after year.
Which one to pick
Pick wood if the up-front price matters most and you don't mind the upkeep. Pick vinyl if you plan to stay in the house and you'd rather never stain a fence again. We build both, and we'll price both at the free estimate.
What changes the price
Height and length
Taller fences use more material, and longer runs cost less per foot.
Gates
Each gate adds hardware and labour, so count how many you need.
The ground
Slopes need stepped sections, and an old fence has to come down and be hauled away first.
Local rules
Windsor and the towns in Essex County limit fence height, especially in front yards and near corners, and a few of them require a permit. Check your town's rules before you build.

How much does it cost to fence a backyard?
It depends on the length of the fence line. A typical city backyard needs about 150 ft of fence: about $5,250–$8,250 in wood or $8,250–$12,750 in vinyl, plus gates at $400–$900 each.
How much does 200 feet of fencing cost?
About $7,000–$11,000 in wood or $11,000–$17,000 in vinyl, before HST, plus gates at $400–$900 each.
Who pays for a fence between neighbours?
Talk to your neighbour before the old fence comes down, and put what you agree to in writing. In most of Ontario, the Line Fences Act gives neighbours a way to settle a dispute. Windsor left that system in 2026 and now has a non-binding guideline instead.
